Our Why

According to the United Nations Clinic and the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC), countries in sub-Saharan Africa rely heavily on voluntary blood donors but face significant challenges in meeting their annual blood supply needs. Currently, only about 26%–27% (less than 500,000 pints) of the required blood is donated annually, leaving a staggering shortfall of 73.3%.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights hemorrhage as a leading cause of maternal mortality in the region. Many women face life-threatening complications due to unskilled birth attendance, deliveries in poorly equipped facilities, and a critical shortage of essential obstetric care resources, including blood for transfusions. In Nigeria alone, maternal mortality rates remain alarmingly high, with 800–840 women per 100,000 dying during childbirth, often due to a lack of adequate blood supply.

At Oneus, we aim to address this 73.3% shortfall by introducing an innovative incentive model designed to encourage blood donation. Our goal is to bridge this critical gap, ensuring that life-saving blood is available when and where it’s needed most. By working together, we can save lives, reduce preventable maternal deaths, and address blood-related emergencies in the region effectively.

Our Methods

Advocacy

We actively raise awareness about the critical need for blood donations through targeted campaigns, community outreach programs, and educational initiatives across Africa. Our mission is to break down misconceptions, overcome barriers, and foster a culture of consistent, voluntary blood donation.

Collaboration with Healthcare Centers and General Hospitals

We partner with healthcare facilities and general hospitals to ensure a reliable supply of safe blood. Through these collaborations, we aim to improve blood transfusion services, upgrade infrastructure, and make life-saving resources more accessible to underserved communities across the continent.

Incentive-Based Partnerships

Sustainability is key to our mission. We work with lifestyle companies to offer engaging and meaningful incentives that encourage blood donations. These partnerships not only boost donor participation but also cultivate a long-term commitment to saving lives through regular blood donation.

Collaborating with Private Blood Banks

As part of our sustainability strategy, we partner with private blood banks (PBB). We direct donors to these facilities and, in return, they sell blood to our clients at a discounted rate. This mutually beneficial collaboration ensures a steady supply of blood, supports the operations of private blood banks, and provides affordable access to life-saving blood for those in need.

Why do people donate?

lines

The purpose of donating blood varies from person to person, but there are common and compelling reasons that make this act invaluable:

  1. Saving Lives and Supporting Those in Need
    • Donating blood directly helps people in need, whether they are accident victims, patients undergoing surgery, patients of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) or individuals with chronic conditions like sickle cell anemia or cancer. This simple act of kindness creates a profound impact, as every blood donation has the potential to save multiple lives.
  2. Maintaining a Stable Blood Supply
    • Regular blood donors play a critical role in keeping the nation’s blood supply steady. While many people donate blood during crises or disasters, it’s important to remember that blood is needed every day for routine medical procedures, emergencies, and ongoing patient care.
  3. The Irreplaceable Nature of Blood
    • There is no artificial substitute for human blood, making donors the sole source of this life-saving resource. For individuals requiring blood transfusions, donors provide a lifeline that cannot be replicated through any other means.
  4. Preparedness for Emergencies and Disasters
    • In the event of emergencies or large-scale disasters, a robust blood supply becomes an urgent and critical need. Despite advancements in healthcare technology, there is no alternative to blood donation when it comes to saving lives in such situations.
  5. A Simple Act with a Profound Impact
    • By donating blood, you’re contributing to a cause that transcends personal boundaries, connecting you to a community of life-savers. Each donation ensures that hospitals and healthcare providers are equipped to meet the needs of patients at any given time.

Your decision to donate blood today could be the difference between life and death for someone tomorrow. Join the movement, save lives, and be a hero
